Contrary to popular belief, dog grooming is not priced according to the dog’s size. What matters most is coat type, and what condition the coat is in. A Shih Tzu that is brushed daily and groomed every 6-8 weeks is a much easier and less time-consuming grooming job than the Shih Tzu that is heavily matted and comes in once-a-year. The once-a-year Shih Tzu is probably not very familiar with being groomed, and may struggle and fight the process, requiring a second pair of hands on the dog for his own safety.
The 2 year old Golden Retriever who gets a professional bath, blow dry and a bit of trimming to get tidied-up every three months is much easier and faster to groom than the 9 Year old Golden who is never brushed, swims in the lake all summer and tries every year to befriend a skunk. His coat is so matted and tangled that the skunk shampoo cannot even penetrate the mats. He’ll need to be shaved behind his ears, thighs and armpits, and the rest of his body brushed for a long, long time to combat the shedding. And he struggles thru it all, because this is all new to him.
There are different situations that may increase the base price of your grooming charge. These situations include the type of coat, condition the coat is in, the temperament of your pet, and the desired cut. We also offer a variety of add-on services that could increase the price of your groom. Anything that may increase the charge of your groom will be discussed with you at the time of drop off. We always do our best to give you an honest estimate of the grooming price, but occasionally we will find something during the bath or brushing that needs to be dealt with immediately, such as ticks or fleas. Of course we save the souvenirs for you!
At Bilbo’s Hydrotherapy and Pet Spa, we understand the needs of injured and ailing pets and therefore are able to offer grooming to pets with special needs. We know that some pets are unable to stand for long periods of time required for grooming, some pets have difficulty standing if able at all. These pets should be bathed and groomed by professionals that understand how to make their experience not only pleasant but one that doesn’t exacerbate current conditions.
Bilbo’s offers a PUPPY INDUCTION for £25. We feel, this gives your puppy a gentle introduction to the grooming experience. The induction also gives both the owner and puppy chance to look round our salon and meet us.
The Puppy Induction consists of 3 sessions, over 3 weeks. We will cover handling, bathing, table, drying, clippers and scissors as appropriate to breed. We will reward your puppy with lots of cuddles and playtime. Our aim is to make the experience as enjoyable as possible, a positive introduction early on to grooming will help your puppy look forward to being pampered for the rest of their lives.
Ideally a puppy should start a grooming session as soon as possible after they have completed their course of initial vaccinations. This is usually about 13 weeks old, but Bilbo’s Puppy Induction is available for puppies up to 6 months of age.
The first step of our Puppy Induction is for you to bring your puppy into the salon to meet us. We will give you tips on how to groom your puppy and how to carry out a health check. This will take around 20 minutes and we will answer any questions you have about our salon and grooming. They will receive lots of cuddles and attention.
The second step is for you to leave your puppy with us for approximately 30 minutes.
We will introduce the puppy to being handled, health checked, a chance to get accustomed to equipment sounds, and hopefully give them a little brush through.
At the final step of our Puppy Induction, we will bath, dry, brush out and tidy up puppy’s face and sanitary area. This will take no longer than an hour.
Following the Puppy Induction, we recommend you make a booking to carry out your puppy’s first proper full groom within 4 weeks.
We aim to make this experience enjoyable and fun, hopefully your dog will then be happy and comfortable with the grooming process for the rest of their life.
